Principal Mechanical Engineer (filled)- Robotics, Boston, MA

We are seeking a hands-on Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our highly collaborative and talented engineering team in Boston, MA. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will be an individual contributor who will serve as the technical lead and mentor to other mechanical engineering team members. This position will report to the Director of Systems Engineering.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in development efforts for ground breaking electromechanical systems throughout the entire product life cycle – personally contributing to prototyping, product development, system testing and characterization, manufacturing support and ongoing cost reduction and product improvement activities
  • Drive the adoption of industry best practices for low cost design, design for mass production, design for manufacturing and design for assembly efforts and mentor other team members in these areas
  • Work closely with Product Management and Design functions, as well as other engineering functions, to develop innovative mechanical architectures for new and existing products
  • Lead and manage projects to develop new mechanical systems and sub-components for new and existing products
  • Communicate with vendors, specify and select components, and work closely with customers and product managers to ensure designs meet stated requirements
  • Lead and contribute to a process of continuous improvement and cost reduction for existing product lines
  • Lead and contribute to verification testing and risk analysis activities such as FMEA
  • Support product documentation efforts, including creating technical specifications that implement market and product requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering
  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience designing complex electromechanical products for high manufacturing volumes that were released to customers in a commercial setting
  • Extensive experience developing mass produced products that utilized a variety of low cost manufacturing processes and techniques
  • Excellent team player; comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic, interdisciplinary team comprising mechanical, electrical, controls and software engineers, as well as designers, product managers and manufacturing and operations personnel
  • Proven track record in all phases of the product development cycle
  • Proficiency in Solidworks, Pro/Engineer or a comparable mechanical CAD package
  • Experience with a variety of prototyping techniques, including SLS, SLA and other rapid prototyping techniques, metal casting techniques, machining, sheet metal fabrication and similar processes
  • Experience fabricating parts using: die casting, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, thermoforming and similar manufacturing processes
  • Experience in industrial automation equipment or robotics is desirable
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience working with a software development team is a plus
